Green Agate
Agate is a translucent crystal variety of quartz and a sub type of chalcedony. Agate stones are similar in physical properties to jasper, flint, chert, petrified wood, and tiger's-eye, and are sometimes found in close proximity to opal. The brilliant natural color of banded agate rocks when made into oil candles are quite aesthetic to the eye. An agate stones'natural bands form as silica from solution is slowly deposited into cavities and veins in older rock. It is a type of chalcedonic quartz that is made unique by the presence of natural color banding in curved or random patterns. This is what makes agate oil candles and night lights so attractive. Most natural agate that is used for decorative purposes is composed of two or more tones of dark-red, often intermingled with white bands, but this stone is often composed of various tints of gray and white. Since agate is fairly porous, it can be dyed permanently in a host of other colors and then used in the jewelry industry. It was once believed that these semi precious gem stones were the stone of peace and healing. They were cherished gems in antiquity during the ancient Biblical times. Historicly believed to attract strength and protect from stress and energy drains.
NOTE: Agate is the customary gem for the 12th and 14th wedding anniversary as well as a birth stone of May and June (a variety of colors).
